For Christmas 1999 we bought our family a Sony DV Digital Camcorder. I had been using it with a Haupauge USB video tuner to capture still photos, it does an impressive job, however I have always wanted to use the FireWire interface to not only capture still photos without analog conversion, but also capture and edit video. I bought an IEEE 1394 interface for my PC, but I have too much stuff on it and could not get it working, even after a week of trying. I got my chance on August 20th, 2000. A good friend brought over an Apple PowerMac G4 with FireWire, so I could help him set it up. I found my FireWire cable, downloaded iMovie from Apple's web site, plugged it in and within minutes I had it capturing video. Much of this is driven by my belief that broadband access and good tools can foster new and creative use of the internet for education and entertainment.
In late July my family and I visited my parents in Milwaukee. I got a lot of nice video on that trip. One of my favorites is a close-up of a firefly that my son Peter caught. Peter is really into animals, bugs and nature. You will need a QuickTime 4.1 compatible player to view these. I have provided a link below to Apple's web site, if you don't have the player. I have provided three versions, the Broadband version is the best quality, a medium version and a postage stamp sized version for internet users who are not yet broadband enabled!
This is just a start, there will be more to come...
